Leeds Emergency Gas Engineer.

The most major cause of gas leaks is poorly maintained gas appliances. That’s why Fixx has committed itself to providing the best top-level service available in Leeds, as well as spreading awareness on what to do if you detect a gas leak. Lives could be at stake.

So what does gas smell like?

A substance called mercaptan is added to Gas to provide an unmistakable odour of rotten eggs, cabbage, or smelly socks. This sulphur-like smell is added to make it easy to detect, because gas is originally odourless.

Are there any other signs of a gas leak?

The bad smell should be enough to tip you off, but there are other ways that could indicate you’re suffering from a gas leak. These include:

  • Hissing – There should be a hissing sound near where the gas is escaping, which should also be where the smell is strongest.
  • High Gas Usage – If you have a smart meter or some other form of tracking energy payments, you will notice that the gas is being used up faster for seemingly no reason with a gas leak.
  • Plant Death – Contact with gas can kill plants over time. You should notice this fairly fast.
  • Physical Symptoms – Inhaling the gas alone with affect you in several ways:
    • Headaches
    • Fatigue
    • Dizziness
    • Confusion
    • Nausea
    • Throat Irritation
    • Vomiting
    • Blurred Vision
    • Shortness of Breath
    • Loss of Consciousness

What steps should you take if you suspect a gas leak?

If you find one of the above signs that you may have a gas leak, follow the following instructions to make sure that you are safe, and eliminate all doubt.

  • Fresh Air – Open up the windows and allow fresh air to circulate throughout your building.
  • Cut off the Gas – Locate the mains tap near the gas meter. Rotate the handle a quarter turn until it’s perpendicular to the pipe. This will cut off the gas flow.
  • Leave – Exit the property.
  • Emergency Service – Contact the National Gas Emergency Service at 0800 111 999 using a mobile. Follow their advice.
  • Wait – Stay at a safe distance from the house until a Gas Safe registered engineer arrives.
  • Medical Attention – If you feel unwell, contact medical staff right away.

Remember, a gas leak is a potentially life-threatening situation. You should vacate the premises with any family/pets and contact the National Gas Emergency Number at 0800 111 999

If you suspect a gas leak, here are the things you absolutely must not do:

  • Naked Flames – Do not smoke, light matches or use any other sources of naked flames.
  • Electrical Switches – Do not flip electrical switches, such as light switches or household appliances as these may cause a spark that could ignite gas.
  • Beware of hidden switches – Your mobile phone counts as a switch, as do doorbells, lights or any other electrics that may produce a spark.

Gas Emergency

What are the causes of a gas leak?

A gas leak can be caused by poorly maintained appliances, faulty appliances, or improperly installed gas appliances. Sometimes the leak may be external and related to a leak in the underground pipes serving the property.

What are the consequences if a gas leak is not addressed?

Failure to address a gas leak can result in many disastrous outcomes. The three biggest of which are fires, explosions and gas poisoning. Anyone who has been in contact with a gas leak, even after taking necessary steps, should monitor their health closely – as sometimes gas has unseen consequences on the body.

The best way to combat a gas leak, however, is by having a system in place to detect it for you. These can be anything from a gas detector alarm, carbon monoxide detector or even a smoke alarm. These go a long way in ensuring that you and your family are kept safe – so do some quick research and ensure that they are working correctly annually. A small price to pay for safety.

Emergency Gas Engineer Leeds FAQ's

How Long Do Gas Safety Checks Take?

A gas safety check typically goes on between half an hour to an hour per appliance. This may go longer, depending on the complexity of the system, accessibility of the appliance etc. Multiple gas appliances will cause the check to take even longer.

Remember that gas safety checks are charged by the hour.

How Often Should Gas Pipes Be Replaced or Inspected?

To ensure that your gas pipes are in good condition, they should be inspected regularly. We recommend signing up with an annual scheme to have your gas appliances checked by a gas-safe registered engineer.

The engineer will be able to spot when you need a new pipe or be able to tell how long you’ve got left with your original ones. Aside from that, there’s no fixed schedule for replacing gas pipes. It is entirely dependent on the condition of the pipes, as well as how often they’re cared for and maintained.
