Air Source Heat Pumps For Businesses
What Can A Commercial Heat Pump Do For My Business?
A commercial air source heat pump can transform the way you use energy at your business premises. As both heating and cooling systems, air source heat pumps are able to provide space heating and hot water, using only the electrical energy required to power the pump.
The incredible energy efficiency of heat pump systems also means that your business energy bills will reduce, and as low carbon heating systems you’ll improve your business’ carbon footprint to boot.

How Do Commercial Air Source Heat Pumps Work?
Installing heat pumps means you’ll rely on natural thermal energy in the air for your heating. Ambient heat in the air outside your property will be transferred into your property via a process that will further heat the air, raising its temperature, and making it appropriate for use as a method to heat water for your radiators and hot water tanks which can then be used throughout your building.
A commercial air source heat pump is able to operate in temperatures as low as -25 degrees Celsius, so they can extract heat from the air even when you assume there is no heat to be found. And, on top of that, for every 1kW of electrical energy used to power the commercial heat pumps at your property, they’ll have an output of around 3-4kW of heat energy, making them 300-400% efficient!

Are There Any Grants Available For Commercial Heat Pumps?
Yes! Installing heat pumps in commercial buildings can be an expensive endeavour. Thankfully, the UK government recognises the importance of reducing the nation’s carbon footprint, so they offer financial incentives for switching to heat pump systems at both residential and commercial premises.
One such solution is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) which is currently offering £7500 towards the cost of air source heat pumps at properties. HOWEVER, in order to qualify for commercial heat pumps, you’ll have to ensure the heat pump size is less than 45kWth, which may be suitable for certain businesses like shops or an office, but probably won’t be sufficient for large businesses like warehouses or entire shopping centres.
We can help determine if commercial heat pumps for your business will qualify for grant support or not, and provide you with an accurate, no-obligation quote completely free today.
Air Source Commercial Heat Pump FAQ's
Are commercial air source heat pumps suitable for all businesses?
No. An air source heat pump, regardless of whether it’s installed in a commercial building or a residential one, MUST be installed at a property with excellent insulation installed. Even the best air source heat pump won’t be able to keep a building warm if there isn’t good insulation.
Where there are issues with insulation – such as EPC recommendations for new or improved cavity wall or loft insulation – air source heat pumps should be avoided.
Large, poorly insulated warehouses, for example, would end up spending far more on electricity compared to traditional heating if an air source heat pump were to be installed and no insulation improvements were made.
In some cases, commercial heat pumps just aren’t suitable, but our expert team can help determine if that’s the case for you and your business when you get in touch.
What are the benefits of commercial air source heat pumps?
As one of the best sustainable heating solutions out there, air source heat pumps for commercial purposes bring a host of benefits:
- Vastly improved energy efficiency
- Reduced fuel bills each month
- Provide heating and cooling solutions
- Lower carbon footprint
- Low maintenance costs
- Heat pumps with commercial applications can last 25 years and beyond
- Improved green brand reputation
Are there any considerations I need to make before committing to a commercial heat pump?
Before you dive into a commercial heat pump, you’ll need to think about some key issues.
First, do you have appropriate insulation at your commercial building? If not, an air source heat pump may not be suitable.
Second, do you have appropriate radiators for space heating? Because air source heat pumps generally run at lower temperatures than boilers, you’ll need larger radiators to heat a space to a similar temperature. If you don’t have large radiators now, do you have the space for them when you install your air source heat pump?
Finally, how old is your property? Whilst a well-insulated older property is often suitable for a heat pump, not all older properties will be.
If you’re unsure if a heat pump is right for you, contact us today. Our experts at Fixx will be able to help you decide the best course of action when making improvements to your business.
How much does a commercial heat pump cost?
A heat pump system will vary in price based on a number of factors.
One such factor is the size of the commercial heat pump you need. The larger the system, the more it will cost.
Linking to this, heat pump technology needs to be installed at your commercial building, meaning pipes and hardware need to be installed, too. The larger your system, the more of this you’ll need, and the higher your installation costs will be as a result.
Another factor is the model of heat pump you opt for. Heat pump manufacturers will charge different amounts for their heat pumps because of things like recognised brand name, longevity in the industry, etc. The model you choose will impact the final price of your commercial air source heat pump.
So, what does all this mean for you?
The truth is, we can’t give you an accurate quote until we know more about the size heat pump you need and the type of installation we’d be looking at.
However, we offer a completely free, no obligation quote upfront so you can see exactly what we can do for your business before you even agree to work with us.

How much can a business save with a heat pump?
It obviously depends on what’s heating your building at the moment, but compared to electric heating with baseboard heaters and furnaces, etc, you’ll save around 50% on your energy bills each year.
When switching from an older gas boiler, you’ll also make significant savings, though it’s much trickier to calculate because you’ll notice an increase in electricity bills, but zero gas bills.
The fact of the matter is this: If you have a commercial building that’s properly insulated and is able to accommodate a commercial heat pump, you WILL make savings.
In cases where your property isn’t suitable for commercial heat pumps, we might be able to find you another business improvement that can help save you money – such as solar panels for businesses.
Work with us today.
Are heat pumps effective in commercial buildings?
So long as the necessary precautions have been taken to ensure the heat pump is designed to work for that specific commercial property – meaning the system is well-designed and the building’s insulation levels have been checked to ensure a heat pump will work effectively – then yes, heat pumps will be able to warm buildings just as well as other measures.
And, on top of that, your new heat pump system will save you money, help your business improve its green credentials, and move it away from relying on fossil fuels.
Does Fixx offer commercial ground source heat pumps?
We do not offer a commercial ground source heat pump option, as these are often prohibitively expensive and we find air source commercial heat pumps to be an almost universally better option.
Does Fixx offer commercial water source heat pumps?
We do not offer commercial water source heat pumps because they’re only suitable for very specific businesses in very specific locations (mostly those that are close to a large body of water), so air source heat pumps for commercial properties are usually preferred.
How do heat pumps compare to traditional heating methods for commercial buildings?
Most commercial buildings will rely on traditional gas boilers to provide space heating and hot water to their property.
You can measure how heat pumps compare to a gas boiler in two key ways:
- Carbon emissions
- Energy efficiency
In terms of the amount of carbon being emitted by either heating system, air source heat pumps clearly outperform traditional boilers. Heat pump technology is green technology, whereas traditional gas boilers rely on fossil fuels, which actively damage the environment.
Note: If you combine an air source heat pump with solar panels for businesses, then you can have a completely green heating solution, as your solar panels can power your heat pump rather than electricity from the National Grid which may use fossil fuels.
Air source heat pumps are also much more energy efficient than gas boilers. Even the most efficient gas boiler will only be around 98% efficient. This, compared to a heat pump’s 300-400% energy efficiency, is not that impressive.
What happened to the renewable heat incentive?
The renewable heat incentive, or RHI, was a government initiative designed to help buildings switch to renewable energy sources for their heating needs.
Air source heat pumps were covered by this.
That meant you could receive some funding towards your commercial heat pump as a business. However, RHI has since closed to new applicants.
If you’re looking for funding today, contact our experts at Fixx. If there are any new grants or schemes you could benefit from, we’ll always point you in that direction.
